Dancing Elephants and Stewed Celery

Noortmann's "Brief Trespass, Two"
Noortmann's "Brief Trespass, Two"

I haven’t updated this blog in quite some time.  As I’ve mentioned, life is complicated, and while it’s true that I still do not consider you to be stewed celery, I’m struggling a bit.

Is it obvious that the primary job of the artist is to create art?  Yes, but as all artists eventually know, what is obvious is often a trap, or a trick, or at least lazy.  Creating art, it seems, is the primary function of the amateur artist.   The co-equal or even primary role of the professional artist is to hype, leverage, license, and otherwise flog the previously created.  Is that cynical?  Jaded?  I’m too young (as an artist) to be jaded, right?   Yes, because I’m still distracted by creation, dammit.   Not just paintings.  I still find myself writing.  I still find myself building.  I still find myself chewing up time in the kitchen experimenting with unfamiliar produce.

Occasionally, mostly when people watching, I find myself wondering what other people are distracted by.   Mostly appetites and Maslow’s ground cover it looks to me;  food, shelter, sex, and fashion take up a fair amount of time and energy, and then I suppose it’s easy to be distracted by relationships and entertainment.  For instance, my nineteen-year-old has been sucking up a bunch of my mental bandwidth.  For some time it’s been difficult to concentrate on much other than how to fix him, move him out, or murder him.  Fortunately, I can still be distracted by The Daily Show four nights a week and Jon Stewart helps my perspective.

So although this blog has been absent, I did get out another issue of The Conceit a little while back, in which I told you that I was going to start painting under three different signatures.  I can now brag that I have done so, and now we, the three of us, have a solo show coming up.  I’m showing all three personas together during the month of March at White Space Gallery here in Ogden, Utah.  Opening night is during first Friday gallery stroll on Friday March 6th, 2015, from 6-9 pm.  There will be art, and soup, and bread, and wine, and high-tech interfaces, and dancing elephants, and scantily clad relief society show-girls, and an Eagle Forum hip-hop extravaganza, and much, much more!  Or less maybe.  But definitely soup.

"Yes, but as all artists eventually know, what is obvious is often a trap, or a trick, or at least lazy."

I loved this part. I've been trying to write music for a couple of years ago, and I can tell you that laziness is my barrier. Perhaps I should feel lucky that I don't presume to ever achieve "professional" status in this.

Also, I have just blocked out the evening of March 6th on my calendar. You better bet there!
